The True King Has Come: A Palm Sunday Devotional
Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11; John 12:12-19; Philippians 2:5-8; Revelation 3:20
1. How Does Jesus’ Entry on a Donkey Define His Kingship?
Scripture: Matthew 21:5 — “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
Reflection:
Jesus’ choice to enter Jerusalem humbly on a donkey challenges our expectations of power. Rather than a conquering warrior, He models a kingdom of peace and service. This act fulfills prophecy and declares that true kingship is marked by humility, not force.
Question: In what ways can you embody Jesus’ humble kingship in your daily life—serving others with quiet strength and peace?
2. Are Our Expectations of Jesus’ Kingdom Aligned with His True Mission?
Scripture: John 12:12-13 — “They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the king of Israel!’”
Reflection:
The crowds expected a political liberator, but Jesus came to transform hearts, not just nations. Sometimes we expect Jesus to fix worldly problems first, but His kingdom brings spiritual renewal that changes everything from the inside out.
Question: Are you open to embracing Jesus’ kingdom in its fullness, including the spiritual transformation that may come before earthly change?
3. How Does Jesus’ Sacrificial Power Challenge Us to Live Differently?
Scripture: Philippians 2:5-8 — “Who, being in very nature God... made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant... he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
Reflection:
Jesus shows us that true power is found in self-emptying love and sacrifice. His kingship is a call to live with humility, serve others, and prioritize peace over dominance. This paradox calls us to follow His example in every relationship and role.
Question: What steps can you take to reflect Jesus’ sacrificial humility in your community, workplace, or family?
Closing:
Scripture: Revelation 3:20 — “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock... If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
Jesus invites you personally to open your heart to His reign. Will you welcome the True King today with a willing and obedient spirit?
